The following was an audio-visual broadcast on an unknown frequency originating somewhere in the Outlands. For viewing convenience, an attempt has been made to transcribe.1
Italicized passages are description of visual components.2
Cobwebs dot the window as moonlight leaks through. A radio dimly plays, screaming fading static. You brush the dust off the aged wood surface and tune it.
(0:18) Jovial music plays.
(0:21) Static overrides the music, and a voice clears their throat. It is of indeterminable accent, likely maritime.
(0:22) Hello.
(0:25) Who are you?
(0:26) Lost. Fumbling in the dark. Take a seat, please. Have a drink.
You sit down on a creaking, red armchair. A tumbler of whiskey sits on the side table. It wasn’t there before.
(0:28) Good.
(0:29) How long have you been here? Lived here? You can’t remember, can you? No one really can, not anymore. We’ve been here for too long.
(0:30) Look at the sky. It shakes. Shimmers. It looks at us and we look back, like lost birds.
(0:32) Music plays over his voice. A radio operator’s voice appears over distorted, unidentifiable grunge.
(0:32) Hello, hello, hello! It’s [INDECIPHERABLE] in the morning. Traffic is, as usual, lost, and the weather is a cool minus thirteen. A nice change of pace from the mists [mists] [mists] [mists] from yesterday. But then, what even is yesterday! Haha!
(0:33) But, folks, what’s in store for today? The forecasts read as [unstable], and the columns are—
(0:34) Static cuts the broadcast short. You are alone. You hear breathing. Do not match the breathing.
(1:09) You’re still here. Where else do you have to go?
(1:10) The voice awaits an answer.
(1:12) Exactly.
(1:13) Emergency broadcast alarm plays.
(1:15) The government has issued a severe storm warning for the following counties: [indecipherable]. Repeat: the government has issued a severe storm warning for [indecipherable]. Seek shelter immediately. Take cover in a basement. Closet. Shuttered room. If you are outside, lie prone on the ground, head over your head. If you are in a car, keep driving.
Do not look in the rear-view mirror. Stay away from any glass until the warning is lifted. It will arrive in [now] [yesterday] [tomorrow] [has been] [will be]
(1:17) The alarm plays again, and then silence.
(1:19) Interesting.
(1:20) The radio shakes.
(1:21) You’re tuned into CRBRS-FM, your [only] station for the local [state of reality]. You might’ve just caught that warning from the government. Remember, weather is [unusual] here. And despite our… contentious relationship with them, stay away from any glass until that warning is lifted.
(1:22) You hear noises outside.
(1:23) For anyone new here, remember—do not look back. Though, if you’re new… you only think you are. You’ve been here before. You just forgot. And you will again.
(1:25) Other advisories for this week: Do not step in the soil. Do not breathe through your mouth—it disturbs them. The moss may whisper to you, but remember it’s not the moss. Do not drink the water. The gas is safe to drink. Do not star gaze—they gaze at you. If you see someone with eyes like an ocean, thank them. Remember to breathe.
You hear a tapping at the window. (1:27) Before I leave you all with the storm, remember the cardinal rule: don’t look back. (1:29) It’s talking to you. (1:30) The radio shifts again. The wood changes. (1:31) Close the blinds. You close the blinds. Don’t look back. Don’t look back. (1:32) You’ve barely touched your drink. It’s whiskey. Tastes metallic. (1:33) Are you going outside? Your fingers brush against the helmet beside the chair. Colour drains from the air around you. (1:56) It’s getting cold. It’s getting dark, and you don’t even remember why you’re here. Do you even remember who you are? You aren’t sure. You feel as if you have a purpose, but… what is that purpose? At 1:59, you stand, put on your helmet, and open the door.
